Hango App: Simplifying Bill Splitting in Restaurants

A Splitting Bills Application by Den Klenkov

I never liked to calculate my part of the check in restaurants. From time to time I tried to find an app with a good UI/UX that solves this problem, but never found.

Hango is an iOS app concept designed by Den Klenkov to simplify the process of bill splitting in a restaurant. With Hango, users can scan a bill, add friends, split it, and get their money back in a matter of seconds. The app's key strengths lie in its quick and efficient scanning capabilities using modern technologies such as AR and AI. Its clean and minimalistic design supports usability, while intuitive and engaging interactions guide users throughout their journey. By focusing on one main task and accomplishing it in the cleanest and easiest way possible, Hango revolutionizes the bill splitting experience.

Den Klenkov utilized software such as Adobe Photoshop, Sketch, Principle, and After Effects to bring the Hango app to life. By using sketch symbols, the designer was able to design faster and have more flexibility. Principle was used for simpler interactions, while After Effects added advanced smooth and liquid scanning effects.

The Hango app was designed at a resolution of 375x812px (iPhone X) and was developed between September 2019 and November 2019 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

When creating the Hango app, Den Klenkov conducted extensive research to understand the frustrations and needs of users when it comes to splitting bills in restaurants. The designer surveyed friends, colleagues, and others to confirm the existence of the problem and to explore how people typically solved it. The research revealed that many people struggled with calculating individual amounts or paying back later. While some cultures split the bill equally among participants, others preferred to pay in cash or by card. Existing apps were often unsatisfactory, leading to a clear demand for a better solution.

The main challenge in designing the Hango app was to create the perfect user experience for bill splitting in restaurants. Den Klenkov conducted market research to identify the biggest frustrations and desirable features of existing apps. Based on the findings, a prioritized feature list was created, focusing on essential functionalities such as scanning the check, displaying items clearly, adding friends based on geolocation, drag-and-drop bill splitting, fingerprint confirmation for payments, reminders, notifications, hangout history, and profile and payment settings. Additional features were planned for future versions.

Hango is an iOS app that simplifies the process of splitting bills in restaurants. Users can scan a check, select people dining with them, split items, and receive their money back. The app's design is lightweight, clean, and focused on the primary task of bill splitting. Motion and animation are carefully used to support users throughout their journey.

The Hango app is the intellectual property of Den Klenkov, with copyrights dating back to 2019.

This innovative design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design category in 2020. The award recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. Hango's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, along with its strong technical and creative skills, contribute to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
